What is an Essence? Like in Skincare... / by Stephanie Itzel

I started using essences not that long ago…

In fact it was actually just a couple of years ago when I was busy working at Kiehl’s in Highland Park Village. I turned to my coworker and asked her, “I’ve never used an essence, do you like this one?”. I was holding the Kiehl's Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence. My co-worker responded letting me know that it was one of the best essences she had ever used. She said it smelled good and felt good, but that the main reason why people liked it was because it made their serums and moisturizers absorb into the skin more effectively.

Later that night you would’ve seen me in front of my mirror. Applying it to my face pressing it into my face feeling like it was going to actually do something. It felt good and smelt good just like she said.

Essences are basically pre-serum anti-aging, hydrating, waters that you apply onto skin after thoroughly cleansing and toning your skin. It’s the step right in between toner and serum. Japanese and Korean skincare enthusiasts live by essences. Some of them may even say that Essences are the essence to your skincare routine!

It wasn’t until I started working for La Prairie that I realized that essence’s were super important, and the reason why, was because one of the first gratis products you get as an employee is the La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion. Which I literally fell in love with. I fell in love with the smell at first but then the feel & texture, then the rest, well you know, the rest is history. Running you at a very high $270 US dollars, you probably think I’m crazy, but I’d rather get the La Prairie Essence in Lotion, if I had to pay for it rather than a Designer bag, because my face is important to me. It has an instant tightening effect and smells clean, but like a fragranced clean. If they had a Skin Caviar Luxe perfume I would buy it, too bad La Prairie discontinued all of their fragrances.

But finally to the point here, which is La Prairie is the only skincare company in the world that has an essence that has Caviar Water listed as their first ingredient. It refines, firms, lifts, and soothes. This also a includes a huge amount of hydration that you are receiving from the actual caviar water.

There are many types of essences, I call them liquid moisturizers, but just like moisturizers help with different concerns, so do essences. Figure out what your concern is, like for example: mine is anti-aging and hydration. So the La Prairie Caviar Essence in Lotion works great, but if I don’t want to spend that huge amount of mula, then I would go for the Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment. Do your research and figure out how much you want to spend and what you’re concerns are. The skincare market is incredibly saturated now so I’m sure you’ll find something worth your while.

Good luck!
